Gilsonite er en naturlig, resinous hydrokarbon. Dette er naturlig asfalt som ligner hardt petroleum asfalt og blir ofte kalt et naturlig asfalt, Asphaltite, Naturlig bitumen, eller asphaltum. Gilsonite er løselig i aromatiske og Aliphatic løsemidler, samt petroleum asfalt. Grunnet sin unike kompatibilitet, Gilsonite er ofte brukt til å herde mykere petroleum products.Gilsonite i massen er blank, sort stoff som ligner på utseendet til mineral obsidian. Det er skjør og kan lett klemt inn i et mørkt brunt pulver.
